The HackSociety™ event took place in the Central Library of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, during 8-10 December, 2016. It was a hackathon kind of event that brought together 100 participants from all over the world, with over 227 youngsters applicants: Canada – 2, Egypt – 2, Estonia – 1, France – 1, Germany – 9, Hungary – 1, India – 2, Mexico – 1, Poland – 1, Romania 150, Russia – 3, Korea – 1, Spain – 7, UK – 24, etc.
TekIt team, Complex Data Processing Group, students from University Politehnica of Bucharest and the Academy of Economic Studies, MobilPro, under the support of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, the Electronics Students League and Major League Hacking offered to the technology enthusiasts the opportunity to exchange ideas, techniques, processes but, on the other hand, engaged the competitors in various task-solving challenges.
Another purpose of this contest was to bring together the competitors, the sponsors and the private labor environment. Such an approach can always offer various opportunities to both sides – the academic and the private business fields. Bringing them together is a purpose of any university and private company, since the students must achieve a mandatory practical stage that could conclude into a future (after graduation) collaboration.
The concept of HackSociety™ is synonymous with a creative programming marathon. Thus, during the three days, participants received computer-related tasks (application development) from the sponsors of the event – IBM, Emag, GitHub, Bloomberg.
In short, the tasks were received from:
- BlackRock – requested an application with their API for optical character recognition of their investment faxes;
- Fotonation – proposed 2 tasks for image recognition and image beautification;
- Emag – looked after a Machine Learning Product Matching App;
- The Romanian Government – created APIs for interconnection of governmental databases (api.gov.ro).
The requirements had to be solved within 48 hours of their announcement and each of them was awarded.
